Solids for Little One: Prologue.

☆☆☆

As the Little one turned 6 months exactly when we were visiting my russian family, I started giving him solids in Russia. Originally my plan was to wait on the kid’s first tooth to come out, but the teething process with all that saliva and biting and chewing all the things and objects the kid could rich made me think we won’t see the tooth for some more weeks. So as soon as the Little One hit his 6 months old mark I went to kitchen to cook my first solids meal for him. And it was a sauteed apple puree.

My mom doesn’t have food processor to crush foods into purees easily, so I had my time doing it old-fashioned way by pushing through the sieve. Thinking about how happy I would be to back into my kitchen with my mixer and all hehe.

While we were in Russia the kid got his first Apple, Pear, Carrot and Banana puree, and reaction was good. Russian pediatricians still advice to wait for like a week before introducing next flavor, but as or families both on my and hubby side have zero allergy history I thought I won’t follow this advice.

I wanted to make baby rice as well, but imagining pushing it through the sieve was so not an exciting thought, I decided to wait till we are back to Japan.

Now kid loves both baby rice and sweet potato puree he is getting almost daily, and I am pretty much happy about it. The most fascinating part for me is freezing baby food. It completely changes the game. I just cook a fine portion of let’s say baby rice, divide it by pouring into ice cubes form and thus portioning it, and freeze! Besides, as I am freezing fruit puree as well, I just add a cube of fruit puree to baby rice one when warming it in the microwave, and here we have a fruit baby rice. So simple yet so tasty and nutritious.

The solids I am cooking now are still simple and don’t look like proper recipes, but I will put the Pear Baby Rice one for the record and sort of a kick off.

Baby Rice with Pear puree

for 6 months old

Baby rice

I cook it in rice cooker following instructions and then blend it in food processor until the structure is smooth and runny. After puree is done, freeze it using ice cube trays.

Pear puree (one pear)

  1. Peel the skin and remove the seeds, then cut into small chunks.
  2. Put your cut pear into small saucepan and cover it with water. Bring to boil and keep on low heat for 15 minutes or about it. Pear must be soft.
  3. Transfer pear and remaining liquid into food processor and just press the button.
  4. Freeze puree by using ice cube trays and thus portion it.

Bringing together

Put one cube of baby rice and one cube of pear puree on a plate and get it warm in microwave. Stir it so tastes blend – and it is ready!

It is simple and doesn’t take much time at all. You can experiment with tastes adding different puree to baby rice, so your Little One will be enjoying his rice while getting used to various flavors.

Although the baby food I am making atm doesn’t look like serious recipe one, I am so enjoying making it you have no idea! As I want to cook exclusively for my Little Caterpillar and don’t even want to buy ready foods from stores, I am slowly learning different techniques and ways to make the food healthy while not so time consuming for myself.
