Daio Wasabi Farm in Nagano is waiting for You!

Both me and my husband are totally in love with Pref. Nagano. It has literally everything to enjoy life hehe. Hot springs, beautiful nature with clean water and high mountains, delicious food, tourist attraction spots, you name it! Not to mention you can enjoy Nagano with kids too as there are kid-friendly hotels and restaurants serving kids food.

I am not sure how many times did we went exploring Nagano, but almost each time we stop by one amazing spot, which is Daio Wasabi Farm.

Firstly, you can freely enter the farm and see how the wasabi is grown. I mean where else can you walk above wasabi fields (which are inside the clean waters)? The place is pretty big, with some mountain clean water to drink and some hills to climb, not to mention amazing location with Japanese North Alps right in front.

Second, and my favorite part, is obviously The Food. With exquisite wasabi grown and harvested there you can enjoy Wasabi Croquette Burger, Soft cream and more, and let me tell you it is masterpiece. Reasonably priced delicious things, mind you!

The shop selling a variety of foods and goods there is nice too, with the chance to sample taste wasabi (even if you have no intend to buy, but I guarantee you you will want to buy something after!).

If you ever end up near Azumino in Nagano and have some spare time, I recommend you to stop by Daio Wasabi Farm. And eat one wasabi burger for me too!

Kusatsu Hotsprings

Last weekend our family of 3 took my mom who is currently visiting us in Japan to little hot springs trip. Oh we were waiting for this one for so long! Besides it was the first Japan trip with the Little One (I still can’t name our Back-to-Russia visit a trip, it was more of relatives gathering as it always is). I was excited and terrified at the same time, with 6 months old kid traveling in car with us (he is not used to cars at all), sleeping in hotel with us (no idea on what bed it would be and how it would be), and with lower temperatures (what to put on kid? will he be cold? or not?) at the place we were to go. The funny thing is, as usual, the Little One was feeling most comfy, this kid seriously.

The destination. My hubby is onsen (which stands for hot springs in Japanese) hardcore fan. We loved going to different ones pretty much before I got pregnant, plus hubby does gatherings with his friends exclusively in hot springs. How fancy is that, right? With all this love for hot springs and hot springs culture in Japan neither me, no hubby has never been to one of the most famous hot springs, Kusatsu Onsen. So when we were discussing where to take my mom when she is in Japan for her enjoy-the-time-with-grandson vacation, hubby named Kusatsu right away. And thank gods he did.

Kusatsu is perfect for a trip. Sainokawara Park with hot springs bubbling through in rivers was a good kick off, followed by Kusatsu center with its Yubatake pond full of streams of hot water flowing powerfully and smelling like hot springs just about right. We also went to watch traditional ritual called Yumomi, during which in old times women (not necessarily) were stirring hot water to cool it down so people could actually go in. As the women started the song during the show our Little Caterpillar decided he wants to join and began singing (?) with them, taking laughs of the audience. Oh this kid!

We were staying at cozy and nice place called L’ambre. The owner and his wife were so friendly, and the food (something in between French and Italian) was delicious, plus we even had a small hot spring tub in basement, so what else to wish for?

Of course we tried some local foods, like onsen eggs (eggs poached in hot spring water) and japanese sweets onsen manju, and there were so much more things we could not accomplish this time we decided we are definitely coming here to Kusatsu again! Or we could buy a villa here hahaha. This joke about villa was so funny yet it sounded so serious when hubby was saying it.

Kusatsu, we left our heart with your fabulous hot springs and we are so returning to fetch it in some time!

We are alive and back from Russian trip!

Yes, we are alive!

Two weeks of preparations followed by two weeks of trip back to my Motherland, Russia, took me out of blogging completely. Out of blogging and baking as well. Visiting relatives and the places I grew up is fun, but as I have been out of the country for 8 years already, I don’t feel it being my home anymore. Gosh I have been missing my kitchen like crazy!

Last time I visited my hometown, Yekaterinburg, was 3 years ago, and I kind of suspected facing some changes in the city. It happens to me each time actually. Some changes are good ones, some are not, but surely the city is growing and the places with delicious food are being opened at nice pace as well.

This time I had sort of Nostalgia Tour, rediscovering some true Russian tastes I forgot about. The first one was sea buckthorn. Believe me, I hated these orange berries so much as a child. We had few huge trees at our county house yard, but I never liked the taste. This is why this time, tasting teas, jams and sweets with sea buckthorn it hit me how delicious and unique the taste is! And how sad I am now after learning Japanese don’t have it! (Mr. Internet told me there are some experimental trees planted in Hokkaido, but what is the use for me?)

Second Russian taste I was enjoying during this trip all along was gooseberry taste. Again, we had plenty of gooseberries in our country house yard and those never were my favorite. I was surprised to find gooseberry jam inside mom’s fridge (she made it herself!), and as I tried it I was lost to the outside world. I had almost everything with this jam, and it was never enough hehe. Japan, why don’t you have this one too????

I enjoyed my beloved dairy products as well, crying over my disability to stuff them all into my suitcase!

I discovered new place this time as well, Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center, which was opened year ago. Memorial exhibition is splendid, and cafe inside is really good as well. Couldn’t resist and ordered Bird Cherry Cake, made with bird cherry flour giving the cake unique texture and just right sweetness. I am a fan of this cake now, but, hey, no Bird Cherries here in Japan haha.

Little Caterpillar turned 6 months during the trip, showering in attention of my crazy relatives and lovely friends, smiling and chatting as never. He even got some outfits for cold russian weather which he hated pretty much till the end of the trip (to be honest those outfits looked like the kid was being prepared to go to outer space). Well well, kid, you didn’t catch cold and it is all that matters! Mommy loves you in any outfit!

After this weekend I am finally getting back to cooking and baking, yay! We have persimmons and pumpkins season, and I am super hyped about it! Can’t wait to bake! Stay tuned!

Shibamata Station walk.

During late pregnancy and after the Little one was born we were not able to go anywhere far enough to qualify as traveling. That is why I was so excited about o-Bon as we could go somewhere for even a day. Considering abnormally hot weather and kid getting super fussy we eventually gave up going somewhere far and decided to take a short bus walk to one of the stations near our home.

Hubby’s boss told him once about Shibamata station relatively close to us being splendid for sightseeing. This station is famous for being a home for “Otoko wa tsurai yo” ( it’s tough being man) series, so pretty much everything is related with it. I honestly wanted to watch a bit before going to Shibamata but ended up not being able to. But hey, traveling in Japan means eating loads of tasty things so who cares about film series! Can watch it sometime later!

Shibamata station has everything you would like when having a trip: beautiful Japanese temple Shibamata Taishakuten, with amazing carvings and pines, tons of food to eat while strolling, retro sweets and toys shop, souvenirs shops and Japanese food restaurants to please your appetites. You can even take a river crossing boat tour (which we didn’t do as it was smoking hot), not to mention Tora-San museum for film series lovers.

I strongly recommend souvenir shop near the station selling gold poop figures, as the lady selling it can say “gold poop” on 50 different languages. I heard Russian and gosh I laughed hard!! Sorry Lady, we didn’t buy the poop thought! Maybe next time!

And now let me tell you how Japanese style traveling looks like: we had soba noodles and tempura for lunch, buckwheat soft cream, miso flavored Japanese rice crackers, local famous traditional sweets called kusa-dango, shaved ice kakigori, and we could eat more it’s just we had no time Hahahahahaha! That’s what Japanese style travel is about! You eat, and eat, and eat again.

I’d strongly recommend Shibamata as it is a nice place to hang around for a whole day without getting bored! Next time I will watch series to have another Shibamata experience for sure!
